Nama GRIS merupakan akronim dari Gedung Rakyat Indonesia Semarang. Awalnya merupakan sebuah Sositet de Harmonie milik orang Belanda yang kemudian dibeli oleh masyarakat bumi putera. Tahun 1950-1980 GRIS mengalami masa keemasan dengan menjadi pusat keramaian Kota Semarang yang terkenal dengan wayang orang Ngesti Pandowonya.
